The most innovative solution to a complex problem is often the simplest one. Nowhere is this more true than when designing visual identities. For more than a decade, I’ve been helping Royal find their place through simple design, and my lifelong love affair with the art and style of the action sports industry. Action sports enthusiasts are very discerning. They don’t tolerate ‘good enough’ and they insist on authenticity. Their loyalty cannot be bought, it must be earned. Their disdain can be swift and decisive for less–than–sincere marketing and design efforts. In order to successfully reach the Royal target audience of young, influential, active, and trendsetting individuals, we needed to launch a brand identity that connected with the target audience while communicating what differentiated Royal from the competition.
